9.4.1 Is Altruism Possible in Viscous Populations?

In presenting inclusive fitness theory, Hamilton considered mechanisms by which the relatedness necessary for altruism to evolve might arise. One influential proposal he made, that has dominated ecological hypotheses for the evolution of animal societies, was that viscous populations in which individuals disperse only a short distance from their place of birth, should create the necessary population structure for positive selection on altruism.
